The 8.5” Handy Guillotine Paper Cutter is a lightweight but precise and sturdy trimmer. There isn’t a lot of play in the blade and the plastic strip which functions to hold the paper down has two, rather than just one, point to place your fingers making it easier to secure the paper and get accurate cuts. I find that for me this trimmer works best for trimming around elements rather than straight paper cutting to specific measurements as I frequently need to cut paper wider than the trimmer’s 4 3/4” width. Having said that, because the two point holding system makes is relatively effortless to securely hold the paper you can get wider cuts by reversing the paper and cutting off the part you need rather than the excess, if you’re willing to do the math. However if you’re cutting from an 8 1/2 x 11 inch piece of paper you will still not be able to measure anything that falls between 4.75 and 6.25 inches. What I particularly like and have not seen in other trimmers is that in addition to the blade width (as seen from the top) being exactly 1/2”, the plastic paper holding strip has a raised line exactly 1/4 inch from the edge making it very easy to cut precise borders of either 1/4 or 1/2 inches. Since the plastic strip does have some side to side play you need to make sure you push it all the way to the edge of the blade if you’re using that to measure your 1/4 inch border. Although it has a few limitations, I imagine that for some people this would be the only trimmer they would need.
